4/23/2024 0 Comments Pleurisy lung sounds![]() The human torso model was crafted in reference to manikin models that are typically used to educate students in the health professions. The activity was designed to incorporate inexpensive alternative materials that are readily available and significantly more affordable than products typically used for medical education, yet still able to simulate the effects of these more expensive products. Students were then presented with their own stethoscopes and a cardboard human torso model ( see Figure 1). It was explained that depending on any underlying respiratory diseases, the normal sounds of the lungs may change. Students were first introduced to the importance of lung auscultation (listening to the lungs) as one of health providers’ tools for making diagnoses and clinical judgements. The lung sounds lesson plan aims to introduce students to different lung sounds, which are clinical indicators for different respiratory diseases, including lung cancer. The USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center has provided funding for the program’s curriculum development, student educators, and materials. Each semester, students are taught lessons based on overarching module topics. Our standard lesson plan format includes a general lesson to explain pertinent background information followed by a supplementary activity or experiment to effectively reinforce the concepts being taught. Classes are facilitated at local public elementary schools by undergraduate students. The lesson plans and activities align with grades 3–5 NGSS standards however, they were implemented with students of grades 1–3 (see Online Resources for the complete module). In compliance with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), a cancer education curriculum was developed and implemented featuring lessons based in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts in relation to cancer. In the spring of 2018, a Cancer Education Initiative Program was launched through a partnership between the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, the USC Rossier School of Education, and the USC Dornsife School of Letters Arts and Sciences’ Joint Educational Project (JEP) ( Kast, Singh, and Kast 2018). ![]() ![]() The University of Southern California (USC) has several service learning programs that address disparities in science education within the neighboring Los Angeles community. It does not take much to draw splendid colours out of lead. But alchemy also offered lead a chance to shake off its grey and graceless image. The alchemists believed that lead slowly matured into other metals in the ground. In talk of base metals, which alchemy tried to turn to silver and gold, there was none so base as lead. To alchemists, lead was the lowliest of metals - in a sense, it was where all metals started. For compounds that are not molecular (ionic compounds), it is improper to use the term “molecular mass” and “ formula mass” is generally substituted. The molar mass of the N 2 molecule is therefore 28.02 g/mol. This is referred to as the molecular mass and the molecular mass of any molecule is simply the sum of the atomic masses of all of the elements in that molecule. For nitrogen, the mass of the N 2 molecule is simply (14.01 + 14.01) = 28.02 amu. For a molecule (for example, nitrogen, N 2) the mass of molecule is the sum of the atomic masses of the two nitrogen atoms. The concept of molar mass can also be applied to compounds. Further, if you have 16.00 grams of oxygen atoms, you know from the definition of a mole that your sample contains 6.022 x 10 23 oxygen atoms. For example, the atomic mass of an oxygen atom is 16.00 amu that means the molar mass of an oxygen atom is 16.00 g/mol. Generalizing this definition, the molar mass of any substance in grams per mole is numerically equal to the mass of that substance expressed in atomic mass units. ![]() By definition, the molar mass of carbon-12 is numerically the same, and is therefore exactly 12 grams. We have defined a mole based on the isotopic atomic mass of carbon-12. The atomic mass of an element is the relative average of all of the naturally occurring isotopes of that element and atomic mass is the number that appears in the periodic table. For a more in depth discussion of atomic radius, see the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, "Atomic Radii of the Elements" and Wikipedia.įurther explanation of the atom may be found here.) a carbon atom with six proton and six neutrons in its’ nucleus, surrounded by six electrons. The Van der Walls radius is used for this periodic table. Two common ones are covalent radius (measures in pirometers) and Van der Waals radius. There are a number of different ways to measure atomic radius. The Letters, s, p, d, and f designate the shape of the orbital's and the superscript gives the number of electrons in that orbital. This method of notation vastly simplifies the description for large molecules.Įxample: The electron configuration for Be is 1s 22s 2, but we write 2s 2 where is equivalent to all the electron orbital's in the helium atom. Typically, only the outermost electron shells matter in chemistry, so we truncate the inner electron shell notation by replacing the long-hand orbital description with the symbol for a noble gas in brackets. They can predict properties such as stability, boiling point, and conductivity. Using principles of physics, chemists can predict how atoms will react based upon the electron configuration. The electron configuration is the orbital description of the locations of the electrons in an unexcited atom. These atomic weights should be considered provisional since a new isotope with a longer half-life could be produced in the future. The IUPAC convention is to list the atomic weight of the longest-lived isotope in the periodic table. However, for man-made trans-uranium elements there is no "natural" abundance. ![]() For naturally-occurring elements, the atomic weight is calculated from averaging the weights of the natural abundances of the isotopes of that element. The average number of neutrons for an element can be found by subtracting the number of protons (atomic number) from the atomic mass.Ītomic weight for elements 93-118. Though individual atoms always have an integer number of atomic mass units, the atomic mass on the periodic table is stated as a decimal number because it is an average of the various isotopes of an element. The standard atomic weight is the average mass of an element in atomic mass units ("amu"). Click here for a list of the elements and their symbols. Typically, a symbol is the truncated name of the element or the truncated Latin name of the element. The atomic symbol is one or two letters chosen to represent an element ("H" for "hydrogen," etc.). The number of protons in an atom also determines the chemical behavior of the element. The number of protons in an atom is referred to as the atomic number of that element. For example carbon atoms have six protons, hydrogen atoms have one, and oxygen atoms have eight. The number of protons in an atom defines what element it is. When you open any file of an element in the periodic table, you will find a small table with some basic information about that element. ![]() ![]() ![]()
